It’s official, we can’t quit UGG. Season after season, we return to these classic styles. They’re warm yet breathable, roomy yet lightweight, work appropriate yet lounge ready. The responsibly sourced sheepskin gives us all the cozy vibes, while the personalized footbeds make us feel supported. But most importantly, thanks to the 2016 redesign, we can be our carefree, sometimes-clumsy selves who spill coffee and forget our umbrellas. Not caught up? Let’s fill you in.
Two years ago, UGG launched one of the biggest redesigns in the company’s history, effectively discontinuing the UGG Original Classic that we know and love. Taking customer feedback into account, this overhaul incorporated the latest technological innovations into the nearly unaltered upper design of the original boot. With a few tweaks, UGG was able to deliver a more practical, durable boot while maintaining the same iconic style.
So, what’s the difference exactly? Three things.
UGG incorporated Scotchguard coating to protect boots against surprise drizzles and minor spills. But fair warning: there are limits. UGG recommends limited use in snow and severe rain. The exterior is still water permeable, which means liquids can seep through.
The brand needed to address the flat EVA sole of the Original Classic. Coupled with continuous wear, the old sole wore down the little traction it had. The solution? Treadlite by UGG. A new outsole with increased traction on wet and dry surfaces, plus better durability, cushioning and flexibility.
UGG maintained the sheepskin exterior, nylon stitching and minimalist silhouette that consumers love. Then, added a new, full-grain leather label for a signature premium look. Worn with modern silhouettes and neutral palettes, the new design is laidback sophistication at its best.
If you’re looking to refresh your throwback UGGs this fall (and you can’t live without overflowing mugs of dark roast), remember that the Classic II offers reliable tread, spill-friendly technology and undeniably iconic style.
