KAANAS is a culture-conscious footwear brand that strives to create ethically responsible products that marry playful, feminine, design to classic silhouettes. Unexpected modernity, bold prints, and quality craftsmanship are the elements that define every collection.
'Kaanas' originates from the word used by the Wayuu tribe; a centuries-old matriarchal society from the Guajira Peninsula in Colombia, for the intricate application of their signature weaves, While on a trip to La Guajira in 2013, sisters Liliana and Natalia Acevedo were so moved by the beauty of the Wayuu's textiles they set out to establish a company that would offer footwear designs featuring unique textiles sourced from around the globe.
The brand made its retail debut in Spring/Summer 2014 with an assortment of espadrilles adorned in prints inspired by traditional Wayuu weaves. These first creations were produced by hand with a hammock-weaving mill in a small Colombian workshop. Since then the product assortment has grown to include sneakers, wedges, and for Fall 2016, a range of bootie silhouettes that maintain the brand's effortlessly cool DNA. Each shoe bearing Kaanas' golden script logo is still handcrafted by master artisans.
