The topic of slip resistance may be relevant year-round, but it takes on special meaning in the winter. Whether you're looking for a new pair of winter boots to keep your feet warm and dry while shoveling snow or to take out on the slopes, understanding the different types of traction will help you decide which design will offer the greatest control.

Here's a rundown of many of the popular methods available, as well as our experts' recommendations for which winter activities each is best suited.

Rubber Outsole

Rubber Outsole

There are several factors that go into making a rubber sole slip-resistant, including the materials used and tread pattern. When it comes to selecting a classic winter boot for everyday wear in wintery conditions, Vibram® becomes a popular choice. This is because boots featuring Vibram® outsoles are engineered to provide additional grip on icy and slippery surfaces, as the rubber remains sticky and malleable even in the cold due to a process called vulcanization. Additionally, similar to the way winter tires are manufactured, a Vibram® outsole contains flakes of aluminum and bits of cotton and Kevlar to penetrate snow, ice, and slick rock and improve traction.

Lug Sole

Lug Sole

For even more slip-resistance, look for a pair of winter boots that features a lug sole. Popular in many hiking boots, a lug sole offers increased stability and traction due to the deep indentations in the rubber, which will come in handy if you're traveling over any kind of uneven terrain in snowy or slick conditions.

Removable Steel Spikes

Removable Steel Spikes

This method of winter boot traction is for the truly committed winter athlete and requires special tools and an incredibly thick sole/midsole in order to work properly. Typically made of cold-rolled steel or tungsten carbide, they offer great control on ice, packed snow, wet rocks and uneven terrain.

If you're looking for a slightly less aggressive method, however, winter hiking boots will provide the traction and insulation necessary for most treks.
