I have been wearing nothing but Merrell for over ten years. Everything I have ever bought from Merrell have fit perfect. I guess I have feet meant for Merrell size 10 footwear (haha). Being as expensive as these particular boots were, I was reluctant to order a pair but I am glad I did! There is a small tag on them that says "made in Italy" and the boots truly scream of quality. As far a break in, I wore them all day the first day they arrived and they gave me a little break in grief where the tops of the boots rubbed my skin.so I waited three days and tried them out for another all day wear and all went well with no pains cropping up at all. I have been wearing them all day for the past four days and even though they are still a little stiff I have no more issues that require me to give my feet a rest. These are QUALITY boots! I don't mind the weight at all. I cant imagine finding a higher quality boot. I am very pleased with my purchase. Merrel is a great company. I have dealt with their customer support before and they sent me free shoe laces when I told them that I couldn't find exact replacement laces on their web site for my other boots.

I hike everyday to work 3 miles so I need a pair of boots that can stand up to a beating. These boots fit well, are comfortable, and protect my feet from a very rough trail. The booys are a little stiff but good heavy duty boots need some break in time. I also own a pair of Limmers.

I am an avid hiker with hard to fit feet, I normally have to buy and try many boots before I find a pair that I can live with I usually am a size 10 in boots and find those narrow in the toes I bought these in size 10 and found them about an half a size large I bought another pair in 9.5 (m) and they fit like slippers right out of the box, I am so happy words can not say, its that satisfaction you get when a piece of gear just works right, I would recomend these boots to anyone

Insane boot!

I was given these boots for X-mas in 1993. I have gone on all sorts of hikes with these boots, including winter hikes. I have worn them on several hunting trips, wore them during many Chicago winters along with also wearing them at an ambulance company I worked for as a paramedic, where you were out on the street routinely for hours amidst some brutal Chicago winters. I routinely treated them with beeswax prior to winter for the first five years or so. To this day I still have them with original blue laces. They are worn a bit but still look incredible despite all their use in the past 19 years. I mean the sole and leather uppers are in phenomenal shape. The only true noticeable wear are the metal grommets which have rusted mildly. The boots were a bit uncomfortable at first but after wearing them often enough they really start forming to your foot. A friend once told me prior to owning these.. " the soles will wear out before the boot and they should give you at least 25 years". Boy, was he right and then some!

Serious old-style boot

These are serious old-style boots like your parents or grandparents used in the Dolomites in the 60s. They are heavy and I cannot imagine what it would take to damage them. I have had mine for 10+ years. They are scuffed up to a suede-like finish, but they still function just fine. Just add neatsfoot and you are ready to go. Another reviewer on this site reports that theirs fell apart, but unless they are no longer made the same way, s/he must have gotten an anomalous pair. These boots are really stiff, perhaps too stiff, but if you wear them around for about a week before a long hike you will re-acclimate your foot to these fortresses. These boots don't really break in, rather, you are broken into them. If you and the boots get along, you will be served by them for many, many years. If your feet don't like them, you are out of luck.

Bottom line:
YES, I would recommend this to a friend
