Doc's or at least what are supposed to be their classic 8 eye 1460 are not what they used to be! I've been a Doc's wearer for 12 years now and the last pair of Docs I bought are the worst I have ever owned. They are no longer made in the UK they are now made (if I remember correctly) Taiwan and it shows. While the leather on a new pair of Docs was always stiff you took your lumps got your blisters and after a week or two of heavy wear they were the most comfortable boots ever. The leather on this last pair was so stiff it was almost plastic-like and took me over 6 months of painful wear to get them broken in to where they didn't cause my feet to bleed (yes they ripped my feet up so much one time I rubbed my foot raw to the point of bleeding) but they still fit snug across my foot and feel too narrow and short. Additionally one of the tongues (right boot) was sewn in crooked and leaned to the outside of my foot. As far as the soles go bouncing they are not the shoes do not have the same padding in them they used to and the soles do not have that great spring to them that made your feet feel comfortable for all day walking. Now to add insult to injury to all of this about 5 months after I finally got these things to the point I could wear them (with insoles for comfort; which mind you I had to cut them down so that it was just the heel portion otherwise they were so tight across the top of my foot I couldn't get them on) the super stiff leather started to crack and after another month or two of daily wear there is now a gaping hole on the right side of the right boot where the toe would crease when I walk. So after having 2 pairs of Docs that lasted me ruffly 6 years each this pair that I paid [$] for $20 more than my previous (made in England) pairs lasted only a year! Where is the pride Dr. Martens where is the pride?
Napa Leather is very soft! Get boot for wearing around but not for work. I have owned a pair of the black gloss docs for 8 - 10 years w/ great durablility. The napa leather is a little too soft for work and I already have a little tear in the toe area. So if you want the boot for around town that is soft and comfortable get the napa... Durable and strong leather get the black gloss.
The high quality boot leather is EXTREMELY STIFF when you first recieve them. They take a SOLID 2 weeks of daily wear to break in. After the initial break in period you will have a rugged long lasting boot that you can wear for hours every day but feels very similiar to a well worn high top sneaker. Extremely forgiving on legs and back in my experience. My first pair lasted 5 YEARS of heavy use. Buy them, break them in, and enjoy something for years that flies in the face of our throw away society. Thank you for not selling out Dr. Martens!
These felt quite a bit small when I first got them. But with mink oil and some heat, they stretch out rather nicely. And they are VERY stiff, but that's kind of expected with heavy leather boots. I'm a women with wide, flat feet, so I had to order men's, and these are a tad narrow. Again, they can stretch out nicely though.
I am a supervisor at a casino, and many times, I do not sit for one minute during my 12 hour shifts. These shoes are comfortable enough to keep my feet from hurting too much. I wear a suit to work, and these boots, although they look good with jeans, also look good with a black suit. They are easy to clean, but also tend to look better once the "newness" wears off. The yellow threads tend to look better with a little "schmutz" on them, because they aren't so bright in contrast to the black boot. The only complaint I would have, is that they stain socks when they are new.
