I'm an action sports photographer, so I deal with a variety of conditions while working. Indoor, outdoor, on the water and in rough terrain, rain and muddy conditions, usually in crowds who don't really care whose feet they stomp on. I use different types and brands of boots for different assignments, whichever works best, ... Gill, Thorogood, Converse, and now Bates GX8. Of all my boots, the Bates GX8 are the best, by far. They fit like they are custom-made. No "bite" anywhere. No break-in period. Super comfortable right out of the box. They are snug where they should be snug, and have room where they should have room. I usually have trouble with boots rubbing my ankle bone until broken-in. These boots are designed to have some extra space next to the ankle bone, while fitting snug and secure above and below the bone. The comp toebox is wide and high enough for toe room, with no contact. The soles are stable, and the lacing system allows perfect adjustment, top, middle and bottom. The zipper does what it's supposed to, allowing me to get in and out of the boots without relacing. While looks don't really matter much with work boots, the GX8s look great - I bought the Desert Sand style. The leather is easily cleaned, and they look good enough to wear casually. The best part, besides the great fit, is that these boots feel strong and secure from top to bottom, and front to back. They don"t have any weak spots anywhere. In my opinion, they are perfect.
